About Rex

What I’m all about here at Rex Gudgel Fly Fishing or Get Looped Fly Casting is adaptability and having a good time doing it! Meeting your needs as a fly fisher or caster is always priority one and after 25 plus years of guiding and teaching I know that I can meet those needs and go beyond what you might have expected. If you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced you are welcome and I promise you will receive information and techniques that will improve your fishing and casting.I am a Federation of Fly Fishers Master Certified Casting Instructor, Guide, and a member of Temple Fork Outfitters advisory staff…so this is what I do! Private or group lessons are available at any skill level. I’m available for families, groups, clubs or corporate events to do classes or casting demos.

Fly Fishing 101 classes are available to introduce you the basics of the sport. You will learn about rods, reels, lines, leaders, knots, reading water etc…. everything that it takes to get you on the water and catching fish!

Oh yea, FISH!!
Here in North Georgia I specialize in Trout, Stripers, Hybrids and Carp. I’m lucky to guide some of the best private trout water in Georgia. Working with Jimmy Harris at Unicoi Outfitters we have 5 pieces of private river water available for our clients to choose from. The Chattahoochee, Chestatee, Soque, Noontootla, and Mountain Town, We also have permits to guide many of the public waters in North Georgia. Trophy size Trout or the native wild trout of some of our smaller north Georgia streams, you make the choice. Add to all this that you can take a trip to Argentina at the base of the Andes Mountains with me to catch more big bows, browns and brookies...I think I have your trout needs covered.

For stripers, hybrids and spotted bass you will fish with me on lakes Sydney Lanier and Hartwell and chase the freshwater “line sides”! The lake record striper in Lanier is 47 lbs. I have caught them up to 25 lbs …maybe a 48 pounders this year. The hybrids on Lake Hartwell are hard hitters and great fighters. They tend to average 4-6 lbs with 7 and 8 pounders mixed in! Great fun on the fly rod!! River trips in a jet boat are also a great way to find and catch these fish, this can also be arranged.

Carp the newest trend in fly fishing! Not really! I’ve been catching them on a fly rod since I was 7 or 8…and that was a loooong time ago. They have always been and continue to be a great game fish. Challenging to catch! Sight fishing at its best! These golden boys will drive you crazy, but also make you a better fisherman!

If salt water is on your agenda…oh yea, we’ve got that covered as well. First, I can teach you to make longer casts and deal with casting in the wind, then take you to Boca Grande to catch tarpon, red fish, or snook. Now, lets’ hop a flight and go to Belize where we can add bone fish and permit to that list and get “the slam”.

Let me help you get started or continue your education in this wonderful sport…you might just catch that “fish of a lifetime!”

Watching Rex Gudgel cast a fly rod is like watching Michael Jordan shoot a free-throw with his eyes closed; he's so good at it and has spent so much time perfecting it that it looks effortless. He's an even better teacher of the art of fly casting, and whether it's casting instruction, guiding or just as a companion on the river, I can't think of a more accomplished or more enjoyable person to have at your side.
